Early Life and Education
Duan Yongping’s early years reveal exceptional learning ability and sharp business instincts, laying the foundation for his logical thinking later on.
Birth and Education: Duan Yongping was born in 1961 in Nanchang, Jiangxi. When China reinstated the college entrance exam in 1977, he gained admission in 1978 (at just 17 years old) to Zhejiang University’s Radio Engineering Department (now the College of Information Science and Electronic Engineering). He was among the first cohort of students after the exams resumed.
Further Studies and Early Career: After completing his undergraduate degree, he was assigned to the Beijing Electronic Tube Factory. Not content to stop there, he later enrolled at Renmin University of China’s Institute of Econometrics.
Starting a Business in the South: In 1989, Duan Yongping headed south to Zhongshan, Guangdong, and took over an ailing electronics factory (Rihua Electronics). He quickly spotted the home video game console trend, created the “Subor” brand, and within a few years grew its output to 1 billion RMB—becoming a fixture of a generation’s memories.
Founding BBK: Due to disagreements with the Subor Group over shareholding reform, Duan Yongping resigned in 1995 and founded BBK Electronics Co., Ltd. in Dongguan. BBK soon rose to become number one in China in categories such as cordless phones, VCD players, and educational electronics.
Investment Career
Duan Yongping’s investment career began after he relocated to the U.S. for his family. He is not a pure financial investor; he evaluates businesses through the lens of an entrepreneur.
H&H International Investment: This is one of Duan Yongping’s primary investment vehicles in the U.S. (as disclosed in SEC 13F filings). H&H International Investment, LLC maintains an extremely concentrated portfolio. According to disclosures through 2024, the account has held a heavily weighted position in Apple Inc. for many years, alongside holdings in Berkshire Hathaway, Google, and others. This reflects his style of “putting all your eggs in one basket and watching that basket closely.”
The Legendary NetEase Trade: During the dot-com bust in 2001–2002, NetEase’s stock fell below $1 and faced delisting risk. After deep research, Duan Yongping concluded the company was severely undervalued and invested roughly $2 million. As NetEase rebounded with games like “Westward Journey II,” Duan Yongping made more than 100 times his investment, earning him the nickname “Duan Buffett.”
Lunch with Buffett: In 2006, Duan Yongping bid $620,100 to win the charity lunch with Warren Buffett, becoming the first Chinese person to dine with Buffett. Notably, the young man he brought along was Huang Zheng, who would later found Pinduoduo.
Recent Moves: Beyond long-term holdings in Apple and Moutai, Duan Yongping has recently been active in the U.S. market trading Tencent Holdings (via ADRs) and Pinduoduo, and often shares his moves (such as selling put options) on social media.
Investment Philosophy
Duan Yongping’s investment philosophy is deeply influenced by Warren Buffett but fused with his own manufacturing experience. The core concept is “Benfen” (integrity and doing the right thing).
“Benfen”: To Duan Yongping, investing means buying a company, and the key is corporate culture. He deeply admires “Benfen”—doing the right things and doing things right. As he once said: “If you realize you are doing something wrong, the smallest price is to stop immediately.”
No Shorting, No Borrowing, No Investing in What You Don’t Understand: These are his “three no’s.” He considers shorting and leverage extremely dangerous and insists on only investing in businesses whose models he fully grasps (which is why he holds large positions in Moutai and Apple but avoids complex financial stocks).
“Long Slope, Thick Snow”: He deeply believes in the snowball theory, holding that a good business must have a very long runway (long slope) and a very wide moat (thick snow).
Joyful Investing: He often says, “Investing is simple, but not easy,” and urges investors to own companies that let them sleep soundly rather than swaying with market swings. Under his Snowball ID “大道无形我有型” (The Great Way is Formless, I Have Style), he regularly interacts with retail investors, emphasizing a calm mindset.
Personal Life
Duan Yongping’s personal life is marked by low-key discretion, deep loyalty, and large-scale philanthropy. His decision to “retire at the top” was made to fulfill a promise to his wife.
Retiring for Love: Duan Yongping’s wife, Liu Xin, was once the chief reporter of the Nanchang Evening News and later built her career in the U.S. Before marriage, Duan Yongping promised that he would move to America after the wedding. In 2001, when BBK’s business was at its peak (he was 40 years old), he kept his word, handed management to his protégés—Chen Mingyong (later founder of OPPO), Shen Wei (founder of vivo), and Jin Zhijiang (BBK Education)—and moved to California, becoming a hands-off chairman.
Philanthropist: He and his wife established the Enlight Foundation (心平基金会). Duan Yongping is among the most generous donors to Zhejiang University and Renmin University of China, with cumulative donations of several hundred million RMB, mainly supporting educational infrastructure (such as libraries and classroom buildings) and scholarships.
Golf Enthusiast: After moving to the U.S., he has spent considerable time playing golf, often using it as a metaphor for investing: stay calm, focus on each shot, not on the opponent.
Spiritual Mentor: Although he no longer participates in the day-to-day operations of the BBK family of companies (OPPO/vivo/Xiaotiancai), he remains their spiritual leader.
Books and Writings
Unlike most investment gurus, Duan Yongping himself has never formally published a book. He believes that “publishing a book is putting yourself on the roasting spit.” However, he has left behind an enormous volume of online writings, which fans treat as classics.
Blog and Snowball Column:
In his early years he wrote on a NetEase blog.
More recently, he is mainly active on Xueqiu (Snowball), under the username “大道无形我有型.” There he responds to questions from netizens in real time, producing tens of thousands of investment Q&A entries.
Fan-Compiled “Books”:
Because his words carry such value, fans and investors have compiled his blog posts and Xueqiu replies into volumes. The most widely circulated unofficial collection is titled 《段永平投资问答录》 (Duan Yongping’s Investment Q&A Collection).
These compilations cover his judgments on business models, his analysis of Apple and Moutai, and his life philosophy.
Recommended Reading: He often recommends one book to investors: 《基业长青》 (Built to Last), which has had a profound influence on the “Benfen” culture of the BBK family of companies.
