Fairholme Capital Management

Bruce Berkowitz's investment career, philosophy, and public 13F holdings through Fairholme Capital Management.

Early Life and Education

Bruce Berkowitz was born in 1958. He earned a Bachelor's degree in Economics from the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 1980. His first job was working at a grocery store, an experience that early on taught him the importance of cash flow for a business—perhaps planting the seed for his later focus on companies' free cash flow.

Investment Career

Berkowitz began his investment career at prominent Wall Street firms. He served as a senior portfolio manager at Lehman Brothers and Smith Barney. In 1997, he founded Fairholme Capital Management. In 1999, he launched the flagship Fairholme Fund (FAIRX). His career has been marked by both remarkable highs and significant challenges: Peak Recognition: During the decade from 2000 to 2009, his fund delivered outstanding performance. Morningstar named him “Fund Manager of the Year” and “Fund Manager of the Decade” (2000–2009), and Institutional Investor magazine recognized him as “Fund Manager of the Year” in 2013. Classic Moves: In the wake of the 2008 financial crisis, he made large investments in financial stocks that were widely shunned by the market, such as American International Group (AIG) and Bank of America. These bets generated huge returns and were key to his early success. Recent Strategy and Volatility: In recent years, his investment approach has become extremely concentrated. As of 2025, about 78.5% of the fund’s assets were invested in The St. Joe Company, a Florida real estate developer, with the top ten holdings accounting for 100% of the portfolio. This strategy has led to significant performance swings—for instance, poor results in 2021 and 2022, followed by a sharp 23% gain in 2023. Meanwhile, the fund’s assets under management have declined substantially from a peak of roughly $19 billion.

Investment Philosophy

Berkowitz is a classic contrarian value investor. His core philosophy can be summed up as follows: Ignore the Crowd: This is his first principle of investing. He is willing to buy discarded assets when the market is extremely pessimistic. Moving his firm from Wall Street to the relatively quieter Miami was also a way to distance himself from market noise and groupthink. Focus on Free Cash Flow: He places great emphasis on a company's free cash flow yield, viewing it as a key metric of a business's ability to create real value for shareholders. He tends to invest in companies with free cash flow yields exceeding 10%. High Concentration: He firmly believes, “If you can invest in your best idea, why put money into your tenth or twentieth best idea?” As a result, his portfolio is typically very concentrated, holding only a small number of deeply researched companies. Invest in Competent, Shareholder-Oriented Management: He considers excellent management essential to a company's success, especially in difficult times when they can protect and create value. Preference for Holding Cash: His fund typically keeps about 20% in cash. This serves both to manage risk and to allow swift action when extreme market opportunities arise.

Personal Life

Berkowitz is relatively private about his personal life. Known details include: Residence: He has long lived in Florida, which is also home to his major holding, The St. Joe Company. Alignment of Interests: He has invested a substantial portion of his personal wealth in the funds he manages. He has stated that roughly one-third of his family's assets are invested in Fairholme funds, creating deep alignment with fund shareholders.

Books and Writings

Bruce Berkowitz has not published any widely distributed investment books. The best way to understand the evolution of his investment thinking and specific case studies is to read the Fairholme Fund's shareholder letters he has written.
